Sleeveface

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sleeveface is an Internet phenomenon in which one or more persons body parts with records envelopes (engl. Sleeve ) collapse or expand, thus creating an illusion. Sleeveface became popular on social networks . The exact origin of this idea is unknown. A collection of photographs was published on waxidermy.com in early 2006, but there are previous examples of sleevefacing, including a Mad magazine cover picture and a sketch on the Adam & Joe Show of Gary Numan holding a record sleeve in front of his face . A "sleeveface" before the internet phenomenon was a record cover by DJ J Rocc, whose own cover (front and back) is designed as a group sleeveface. The term 'sleeveface' was coined by Cardiff DJ Carl Morris in April 2007 after pictures were taken of him and his friends holding record sleeves in front of their faces while they were putting on records in a bar in Cardiff. His friend John Rostron published the photos on the internet and founded a group on the emerging platform Facebook . From there the phenomenon spread. John Rostron and Carl Morris published the book Sleeveface: Be The Vinyl (Eng. "Be your record", published by Hoffmann and Campe ), which gathers Sleevefaces from all over the world, which had been submitted via their website www.sleeveface.com.
