Map of Slieve League

The cliffs of Slieve League ( Irish : Sliabh Liag ; translated: Steinberg ) in the west of the Irish county Donegal on the Atlantic Ocean are one of the main attractions of this region. The cliffs, which drop steeply into the sea, are 601 meters high and are among the highest cliffs in Europe . They are often mistakenly referred to in travel guides as the highest sea cliffs in Europe, but the cliffs at Croaghaun on Achill Island and cliff formations in Scandinavia are higher.

On top of the cliff, protected by a semi-circular stone wall, there is a dilapidated beehive hut and the ruins of a chapel. This is the hermitage of Saint Aed . Away from the wall, under a pile of stones around a cross stone, there is a holy spring , and a little further east there is another.

There are several ways to visit the cliffs:

  • By car you drive from Teelin, a small town southeast of the cliffs, over a 4.5 km long two-lane road at Carrigan Head with the first parking lot and through a sheep barrier to the 300 m high Bunglass Point with additional parking spaces, from where you can has a view of the entire cliff. From here you can walk to One Man's Pass with the option of descending to Pilgrim's Pass .
  • The One Man's Pass , already signposted from Teelin, is part of a footpath over the ridge of the cliffs further to Malin Beg in the north. This path, which is very narrow in some places, is dangerous with dizziness or strong winds and gusts.
  • On foot from Carrick you can choose the Pilgrim's Pass (also Old Man's Pass ), which leads behind the cliffs to the chapel on the summit. The last pilgrimage here is said to have taken place in 1909.
  • In summer, boat tours to the foot of the cliffs can be booked from Killybegs and Teelin.
