Sloane Square is an underground, open-top London Underground station in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . It is located on the elegant Sloane Square in the Travelcard tariff zone 1, trains of the Circle Line and District Line stop here . In 2014, 16.76 million passengers used the station.

The station was opened on December 24, 1868 by the Metropolitan District Railway (predecessor of the District Line), as part of the first section between South Kensington and Westminster . At the end of the 1930s, the station was rebuilt and added escalators . However, a German air raid on November 12, 1940 almost completely destroyed the station; 37 people died. After the end of the war, the station building was replaced by a modern new building.

The station crosses the valley of Westbourne , a tributary of the Thames that flows further north through Hyde Park . The river had a major impact on the construction of the station. It could not be built over the river because the route in this area could not be built above ground due to the high land prices. An intersection at the same height was also out of the question, as the water would have had to be diverted with an expensive pump system. For this reason, the station was built under the river and the water was led over the tracks in an iron pipe.
