The Order of the War Victory Cross was an Order of Military Merit of the First Slovak Republic and was donated by Government Decree No. 221/1939 of September 11, 1939 by President Jozef Tiso and was an award for people who showed personal bravery, willingness to make sacrifices, presence of mind in battle or had carried out an act with the soldier unit entrusted to them which contributed to the favorable outcome of the military operation. The cross was also awarded to people who had done an outstanding deed for the Slovak Republic. The award could be made to domestic and foreign military personnel.

Order classes

The top tier of the War Victory Cross was a grand cross, followed by four classes with crosses and three classes with medals as symbols of the order. The insignia of the order consisted of the order cross, the breast star of the 1st and 2nd class, the plug cross of the III. Class, the cross of the IV. Class and the medals of the V, VI. and VII. class. A person could also be honored with all classes of the cross.

Grant authorization

The right to award the order was incumbent on the President of the Slovak Republic himself, who by means of a decree authorized the distinguished person to wear the award. The Minister for National Defense, on the other hand, was responsible for the provisions on the form of the award and its wearing regulations.

Unauthorized wearing of the award

Unauthorized wearing of the cross represented a violation, which, if it was not an act to be punished by a court , could be punished with arrest, which could last up to 14 days or with a fine of up to 10,000 Slovak crowns . If the fine was irrecoverable, the person to be punished could be placed under arrest of up to 28 days. The imprisonment together with the waiver for the bad fine could not exceed 28 days.

Order decoration

The order cross is a patriarchal cross that lies on a silver oval star with stylized linden leaves between the upper and lower crossbars of the cross. The smooth patriarchal cross is enameled red on the Grand Cross and the 1st and 2nd class. The state eagle of the republic with the state coat of arms - three hills with patriarchal cross - is attached between the medal and the ring on the Grand Cross and the 1st and 2nd class. The cross of the III. Class is enameled blue and covered with ornaments. The fourth class has a brown enamelled cross without the oval silver star as a base and carries the state eagle on the ribbon. The ribbon is red with two white stripes in the middle. The round medals are made of bronze , gold-plated in the fifth class and in the VI. Silver- plated class . They show the cross of the order of the three higher classes in the obverse. The inscription ZA ZÁSLUHY (For Merit) horizontally on the lapel . Above and below the text line, three linden leaves pointing up and down.

The medal could also be awarded with swords on the ring.

The silver breast star of the 1st and 2nd class is eight-pointed and has the red enamelled order cross with its lower star in the middle. The collar consists of four chains, which consist of small, red-enameled crosses of the higher classes connected by rings.
