Small Five (Wadden Sea)

As Small Five ( English for "small five") Researchers and the designate national park administrations Wadden Sea , the five most important animals in the Wadden Sea . They are the advertising symbol for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site .

Meant are the lugworm (Arenicola marina), the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule), the common beach crab (Carcinus maenas), the common wadden snail (Hydrobia ulvae) and the North Sea shrimp (Crangon crangon).

These animals make a significant contribution to the turnover of biomass. They eat the smallest plankton and algae that live in the water and on the surface of the tidal flats. On the other hand, they serve as a food source for birds and fish .
