Emerald (brand name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Smaragd is a brand that stands for the highest quality level of wines from the Vinea Wachau winemakers. The name does not come from the gemstone , but from the green lizard , which can often be found in the Wachau vineyard terraces and has become a symbol for this wine. The brand was first used for wines from the 1986 vintage.

This trademark is protected by trademark law and may only be used by member companies of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus protection association. Most of the companies in the Wachau wine-growing region are members of the Vinea Wachau.

Quality requirements

These wines with a minimum must weight of 18.5 ° KMW (92 Öchsle) mature in some vineyards in the Wachau. The wines are fermented to a natural fermentation standstill and always matured dry. Wines with the designation Smaragd with an alcohol content of 12.5% vol. Or more may only be sold from May 1st of the year following the harvest. Wines with more than 9 g / l residual sugar are excluded from the designation. Smaragd wines from Riesling , Veltliner , Neuburger and Gelben Muskateller are traditionally typical of the variety . Wines that were labeled with this brand up to and including the 2005 vintage had to be closed with a natural cork that was at least 49 millimeters long . In the course of the cork discussion, this was more and more a stumbling block and screw caps have been allowed since 2006.

Emerald wines follow on from the Federspiel category. In addition to the legal requirements, they are also subjected to controls by the “ Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus ” association.
