Smart lighting

As Smart Lighting (German Smart lighting ) in Europe networked lighting devices are referred to, the (smart) to changes in the environment or the user wishes to respond. Smart light sources, intelligent LED lights or complex light management systems can be used. They can usually also be controlled remotely via an app.

The digital lighting technology is designed for energy efficiency and added value for the user. The functionalities include, for example, light scenes, dimming, color changes, burglary protection, swarm function of the lights and Human Centric Lighting (HCL). In combination with other smart home devices or trades, additional benefits and convenience are created. Example from the smart home : If a door sensor is coupled with a light, the light comes on automatically when the resident comes home. In the best case scenario, burglars withdraw.

Light control and light regulation according to daylight

Control and regulation systems increase lighting comfort and save energy. They are instruments of light management. Automatic dimming or switching off based on the measurement of the incident daylight is the task of the lighting control. With light control, the desired illuminance is determined in advance and the amount of artificial light is adjusted until the defined illuminance is reached.

Presence detection

There are two sensor technologies for the standard requirement of presence detection: Passive infrared sensors (PIR) and high frequency sensors (HF). PIR sensors detect heat from people and vehicles. HF sensors detect moving bodies similar to bats via transmitted signals and their echo.

Interfaces

Compatible interfaces are the basic requirement for networked building technology. Wire and wireless solutions complement each other in lighting. These include power switches, phase dimmers, Touch & Dim, analog interfaces, DALI, DMX and network interfaces. Frequently used standards for wireless communication are ZigBee and EnOcean. They enable communication between switches, sensors and control centers such as gateways or bridges.

status quo

Smart home applications are becoming increasingly popular. The intelligent control of lighting is used most frequently. According to a representative consumer survey by the ZVEI , one in five Germans already uses networked functions at home. A good 40 percent of these control exterior and interior lighting - that makes light the front runner, followed by heating control. Outdoor use is also currently increasing.

Other definitions

Smart lighting is also less often understood as data transmission by light using light modulation such as Visible Light Communications (VLC) or LiFi. However, a communication network for lighting can be based on light modulation, but does not have to be.
