Snipping Tool is an in Windows operating systems, integrated software for taking screenshots . It has been included in all Windows systems for personal computers since Windows Vista .

Functions

The tool can be used to take screenshots of the Windows operating system, you have the choice:

  • Use the mouse to define a rectangular area to be recorded
  • select individual windows for recording
  • use a pen to select the area to record
  • or record the whole screen directly.

The Snipping Tool also enables basic image processing of the screenshot with different colored pens , an eraser and a highlighter . The recordings can be saved as an image file ( PNG , GIF or JPEG file) or as an MHTML file or sent by email .

history

The tool was first published in 2002 as PowerToy in the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition . Before it became a standard tool in Windows Vista, it was included in the Experience Pack of the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition from 2005.

Since Windows 10 there has been an additional "delay" function that enables time-controlled capture of screenshots. In the medium term, the Snipping Tool is to be replaced by a new tool called Cut and Sketch .
