Snob engine plant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Snob-Motorenwerk was a German company for the production of built-in engines and motorcycles with its seat in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel and in the legal form of a GmbH . It emerged from the Rhein-Motorenwerk . It is not known why the negative connotation term snob was chosen for the company or brand .

history

Between 1921 and 1925 the company built a four-stroke engine with IOE valve control and 154 cm³ displacement , developed by Karl Döpfner , which was built into its own Snob motorcycle and into vehicles from other manufacturers. The engines developed 1.5  hp and were considered to be fast and reliable. The plant produced around 20,000 motorcycles itself. A newspaper advertisement from 1922 shows the “Snob Small Power Wheel” with an unsprung bicycle frame, plug-in tank and belt drive from the motor to the rear wheel, as well as pedals and bicycle chain for starting or driving with muscle power.

In an advertisement from 1923 under the heading: “Over 150 prizes”, among other things: “The so-called fuel tests are just as important as races for all engines. ... In Braunschweig such a test, which was open to all ADAC members, took place in the form of a half-liter trip. The fast snob engine turned out to be the most economical. ... The winner R. Bohs drove 47.1 km with half a liter of petrol !!! "(That means a petrol consumption of 1.06 liters per 100 kilometers.) This message gave the competition a swipe:" Snob came after the others, including DKW of course "
