The Snowplow Game ( English for snowplow game ) was a football game in the National Football League between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots . It took place on December 12, 1982 at Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough , Massachusetts . The Patriots won 3-0.

The game was played during a major New England blizzard and the entire field of play was covered in snow. The game remained without points until the last quarter. With only 4 minutes and 45 seconds left, the then head coach of the Patriots, Ron Meyer , sent Mark Henderson with his snow plow onto the field to clear a small area of snow for kicker John Smith to enable a field goal , which Smith then also scored. This earned the Patriots the three points to victory. The following year the NFL banned the use of snow plows.
