Sobaware

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sobaware is the modern name of medieval , Nubian ceramics that in the kingdom of Alwa was produced. It is named after the main place where the ware Soba , the capital of Alwa, was found. The goods were mainly produced in the first centuries of the Alwa Empire.

The sobaware is mainly characterized by its painting . There are mainly geometric motifs painted on a black to brown coating, which is on the outside, but also on the inside of the vessels. There are a few stylized representations of people and animals. So far, over 500 motifs are known. The main colors are white, red and yellow. The motifs used are almost identical to those that appear on the contemporary wall paintings in the churches. However, it is uncertain how the two genres were related. Did the vase painters copy individual elements from the wall paintings, did wall painters and vase painters use the same pattern books or were wall and vase paintings done by the same artists? The question is unanswered.
