Société préhistorique luxembourgeoise

The Société Préhistorique Luxembourgeoise (SPL) is a scientific association of professional and amateur archaeologists interested in the prehistory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the surrounding area. The society had 199 members in 2012, 34 of them abroad.

The SPL was founded on June 11, 1979 in Luxembourg City . Founding members were Germaine Geiben-Bianchi, Joseph Herr, Marcel Lamesch, Jean Joseph (John.J.) Muller, Liette Muller-Schneider, Fernand Spier, Norbert Theis, Edouard Thibold, Georges Thill, Raymond Waringo and Pierre Ziesaire. Fernand Spier was president for many years. Vice-President was Pierre Ziesaire, John.J. Muller secretary and Georges Thill accountant (until today 2013). The company's headquarters are in Waldbillig (Mullerthal).

The SPL has published a multilingual scientific periodical, the Bulletin de la Société Préhistorique Luxembourgeoise (BSPL) , since 1979 . In this, the latest work and findings on the prehistory (in the broad sense) in Luxembourg but also in neighboring countries are presented. 34 issues had appeared by 2013.

The society also organizes conferences, colloquiums, guided tours and exhibitions.
