Società Botanica Italiana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Società Botanica Italiana is an Italian scientific society based at the University of Florence at 4 Via Giorgio La Pira . As a non-profit organization, the “Italian Botanical Society” promotes general interest in botany through congresses, conferences, seminars and publications.

The history of the society is sometimes traced back to the Società Botanica Fiorentina , founded in Florence by Pier Antonio Micheli in 1716 . However, this society was merged into the Accademia dei Georgofili in 1783 and thus has no direct connection to the Società Botanica Italiana . It was founded by the botanist Filippo Parlatore , first with the "Central Italian Herbarium " established in Florence in 1841 and then with the Giornale Botanico Italiano , first published in 1844 , which then became the journal of the Società Botanica Italiana , founded on January 8, 1888 in Florence . In 1997, the (Nuovo) Giornale Botanico Italiano was renamed Plant Biosystems because Italian and Latin had largely been given up in favor of English.

The company's other journal, Informatore Botanico Italiano , founded in 1969 , was transferred to Pensoft Publishers in 2015 . The publisher has since published it as an open access journal under the name Italian Botanist .

Today (as of 2015) the society is divided into 17 specialist groups and 13 regional sections. The Society's specialist library is on loan from the University of Florence.
