Society of Exploration Geophysicists

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is a non-profit organization founded in Houston , Texas in 1930 to promote the application of geophysics, particularly in raw material exploration. Their office is in Tulsa , Oklahoma .

Most of the around 28,000 members from around 130 countries are in oil exploration, but the company also includes applications of geophysics, for example in engineering geology, environmental geology, archeology.

They publish the journal The Leading Edge (TLE) and the scientific ( peer-reviewed ) journal Geophysics (monthly since 1936). They have a committee for technical standards in geophysics and are active in training their members.

Until 1955 they had their annual general meeting with the AAPG , after which they were independent.
