Sodom is a village on the island of Whalsay, part of the Scottish Shetlands, east of Symbister , the island's main town. Occasionally the older variant of the name Sudheim can also be found. The name is derived from old Norse Suðr-heimr and means southern homestead . The historical core is formed by a hamlet consisting of two Crofter farms , located on a north-sloping slope a little north of the road leading from Symbister to Loch of Huxter and on to Isbister . The writer Hugh MacDiarmid , actually Christopher Murray Grieve , lived in one of the two, now known as Grieve House , from 1933 to 1942 . With the growth of Symbister and Sodom since the beginning of the 20th century, the boundaries between the two places have become blurred.
