The 17th century Sog Monastery or Tsanden Monastery is a monastery of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism . It is located in the Sog district of the Nagqu (Nagchu) administrative district in Tibet , China , at an altitude of 4100 m on the Sog River on the upper reaches of the Salween . Its fortress-like complex was built in 1667 under the Mongolian Khoshuud princes . The buildings of the monastery include the Lhakang Marpo (Red Temple) and Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) temples. The monastery is also known as the "Small Potala Palace" because it is similar in architectural style. Today it houses 180 monks.
