Soil (Stradivarius, 1714)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Soil is a violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1714 . It is considered to be one of his most beautiful works, whose tonal qualities are praised as unique .

The reddish lacquered violin was named after the Belgian industrialist and violin collector Soil from Tournai, who bought it in 1902. It was then bought by Oscar Bondy (Vienna), who already owned the Hellier by Stradivari (completed in 1679). The American-British violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin bought it in 1950. He in turn sold it in 1986 for around one million euros to the world-famous Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman .

Soil is also the name of another, lesser-known Stradivarius from 1708 and two Guarneri violins from 1733 and 1736.
