Zolwer ( lux . : Zolwer , French : Soleuvre ) is a town in the municipality of Sassenheim ( Luxembourg ) with 5,471 inhabitants (as of 2009). It borders on Differdange , among others . On the coat of arms of Zolwer a black lion is depicted on a beige background.

history

Zolwer is the town of Sassenheim that is mentioned earliest. In October 793 or 794, the married couple Garbannus and Ratsint gave the Echternach monastery '' all their property in the Wawergau, near the fort called Zolveren, in the villa called Hagenen ''. So '' Zolwer '' is actually the name of the future castle on the Zolwerknapp before it was used for the village. Zolvere (1135, 1192) sounds almost the same. Probably romanized variants are later handed down: Soloeure (1236) and Soulueur / -Solueuvre (1387). The meaning of the name is still undetermined today.

In the early 1860s, mostly farmers lived in Zolwer. In 1911 three small iron and steel companies got together and founded ARBED (today Arcelor / Mittal ), a steel company with 23 blast furnaces , steel and rolling mills and around 60,000 jobs. Fields and agriculture were largely replaced by mining, and farmers became miners. The ARBED built numerous, mostly smaller houses, which were made available to the guest workers of the steelworks. Little by little, quarters with external workers emerged in Zolwer.

Buildings

The Roman Catholic Church , built in the Middle Ages, is located in the valley of the Zolwerknapp . The Place de l'Indépendance , (German Independence Square ), a small courtyard with several fountains , is located in the center of Zolwer (formerly known as “Basketsterrain” because basketball was also officially played here ) .
