Life

Farassat moved to Vienna with her family in 1978 . She has been working as a freelance photographer since 1991 and attended the international summer academy in 1993 under the direction of Nan Goldin . Between 1993 and 1994 she was a student of Friedl Kubelka at the School for Artistic Photography in Vienna. In addition to its exhibition activities Farassat since 1998 editor and editor in chief of the photography magazine SIOSEH . Her artistic works essentially consist of self-portraits, sequin pictures, light boxes, photos, collages, plastic souvenir cameras with intimate portraits of women, posters and SIOSEH (“the smallest photo magazine in the world” 7.5 × 10.5 cm). Farassat embroidered the surfaces of her photographs with sequins. Outlines or entire areas of the photograph are densely populated. The sequins break the surface many times over. This method creates different effects depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

The colorful glitter of the sequins, which she has made the basic substance of her more recent work, acts as a deliberate overdose, even rather "repellent", at least irritating. This leaves each of her works with a residual riddle, something that is faded out, outshone or swallowed in (and by) the ornament. ( Stefan Grissemann )
