Solitary Islands Marine Park
The Solitary Islands Marine Park (State Water) was designated by the government of New South Wales on September 2, 1998 as their first marine reserve; The Solitary Islands Marine Reserve (Commonwealth Waters) had existed since March 3, 1993, stretching 200 nautical miles from the coastline into the ocean. The marine parks are named after the Solitary Islands .
The State Water's marine reserve stretches 75 km from Muttonbird Island in the south to the Sandon River and Plover Island in the north. The protected 710 km² marine area is located about 600 km north of Sydney .
The marine reserve Commonwealth Waters protects with 160 km² a relatively undisturbed and species-rich ecosystem with a deep sea reef that is connected to the open ocean. The Pimpernel Rock jutting out of the ocean is the most impressive landmark of this marine park.
The waters of the protected areas contain epipelagial fish, sand tiger sharks ( Carcharias taurus ), the grouper Epinephelus damelii , dolphins , but also little tern and other sea birds.
280 fish, 90 coral, 4 species of sea turtles and humpback whales have been counted in the State Water . There are also numerous sea snails there.
In the Commonwealth Waters, in which the waters of two oceans come together, there are a total of 550 fish and 90 coral species.
Furthermore, 15 shipwrecks from the period from 1833 to 1976 are known, and more are suspected.
