Solomon (Makuria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Solomon was a Nubian king who ruled the Makuria Empire until around 1079.

When the rebellious emir of Aswan Kanz ad-Daula fled to Nubia around 1076, the Egyptian vizier Badr al-Jamali demanded his extradition, which Solomon granted. As the patriarchal story reports, Solomon withdrew from the rule around 1079 to become a monk. As is customary in Nubia, he handed over the royal dignity to his sister's son, Giorgios III. Solomon was kidnapped from the monastery to Cairo in 1080 at the instigation of the brother of the extradited Emir . Badr al-Jamali was not involved in the kidnapping, but kept the former king as a prisoner of state in Cairo, where he served as a hostage for the good behavior of his nephew.
