Solowej ( Ukrainian Соловей , German Nachtigall ) is a Ukrainian-language pop song, which was written by Taras Shevchenko and Kateryna Pawlenko and interpreted by the Ukrainian band Go_A . The title won the Widbir 2020 and should therefore represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

background

In January 2020 it was announced that the band Go_A will take part in the Ukrainian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 called Widbir. On February 8, 2020, the first semi-final took place, in which the group was able to reach second place. In the final on February 22nd, the group combined the maximum number of points distributed by the jury and the audience and thus emerged as the winner of the show. The singer Pavlenko described winning her band as "a gain for Ukrainian culture".

Music and lyrics

The title is written entirely in Ukrainian. Pavlenko had refused to write an English text for the play. She wrote the music together with her band member Shevchenko, the lyrics alone. The singer was inspired by the folk song Solowej , which was written by Anton Delwig and composed by Alexander Aljabjew . In addition, she wrote the title based on her own experience. The content is about a woman who falls in love and is no longer taken seriously. However, she is strong enough to turn the tables and face the situation with dignity. The song consists of two stanzas, which are interrupted by a refrain. The second stanza is significantly shorter than the first. This is followed by a bridge, whereupon the chorus is repeated twice.

The entire title is performed with the so-called white chant . The arrangement is characterized by a mixture of electronic music and folk music instruments.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Ukraine should have performed this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. It would have been the first title of the contest that is written entirely in Ukrainian.

publication

The title was presented to the public during the preliminary decision. A slightly revised version was presented at the beginning of March.
