Somatography

With Somatografie (in specialized case: Somatographie, from the Greek body drawing) is referred to in the work studying the graphical method of representation of the human body in technical drawings at a predefined scale.

There is a large number of tools for somatography, generally in the form of templates, video somatography and computer somatography.

Drawing templates

The now withdrawn DIN 33416, on which the Kiel doll is based, for example , defined four body contour classes, each in side and front view, from the "little woman" with 1540 mm height to the "big man" with 1870 mm. The well-known so-called Bosch stencil shows the human figure in side and front view as well as in plan view. General problems with the templates are that different body proportions (“seat giant” and “seat dwarf”) and different joint positions in space are not taken into account.

Video somatography

The video somatography is designed in a CAD system. The human model, however, comes from a video recording and is mixed into the CAD model true to scale. This means that a construction can be checked relatively quickly with regard to its ergonomic design. Video somatography thus represents a transition technology as long as no constructed human models are available for CAD.

Computer somatography

Computer models for humans are now available for common CAD systems. Often used models are:

  • Manikin ,
