The Minden summer pool is an outdoor pool in the East Westphalian city of Minden and is located in the Minden city center in the Weser meadows. After the local authority could no longer finance the pool and it was closed, the swimming pool was reopened in May 2003 through civic engagement . Since then, it has been run by a development association in which the volunteers and citizens of the city of Minden are brought together. Together with the Weser Stadium , the summer pool is part of the "Sportpark Weser".

location

The summer pool is located in Johannsenstrasse south of the city center of Minden on the left bank of the Weser, where Hindenburgplatz used to be. This means that the swimming pool is close to the city center and can be reached in around 500 meters from the city center. The summer pool is located in the Weser meadows and is part of the Mindener Glacis . Right next door is the Weser Stadium , a tennis court and numerous allotments. The summer pool has a swimming pool with a 50-meter lane. A non-swimmer pool measuring 25 by 40 meters with a slide and a baby paddling pool complete the bathing options. In summer there is a large lawn and a changing room. The large swimming pool can also be accessed through a heated hall, which is connected to the pool by a water channel, so that it can be used even when the weather is not so good.

history

The bath was opened on May 18, 1930 as a summer bath for the city of Minden and served from the beginning for public education and military purposes. Citizens and soldiers should learn to swim here. That's why it had a 50 meter track from the start.

The city of Minden had already decided on the open-air swimming pool in 1928, not least because of the introduction of swimming lessons and compulsory swimming in the Prussian army in 1817 by the Prussian general Ernst Heinrich Adolf von Pfuel.

In 1999 the summer pool, which was then owned by the city of Minden, had to close due to empty coffers. It was reopened as a public bath in May 2003. Important elements were renovated by 2004 under the direction of the Troglitz architects. Since then, the traditional swimming pool has been maintained, organized and operated by voluntary helpers, primarily supported by the Förderverein Sommerbad eV, in which around 50 active members and 800 supporters are organized today. Until 2011 she was supported by the volunteer exchange, in which volunteers were organized according to their personal abilities and who were available for additional work. After that, the helper exchange was dissolved and integrated into the development association. The friends' association and its members occupy the cash register from May to September, pay the swimming masters and thus provide legal supervision for the pool in accordance with the collective agreement .

In 2012, a block-type thermal power station was integrated into the heating technology of the bathroom, thus delivering heat and energy for the bathroom in a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. The bath is now owned by Mindener Bäder GmbH, a subsidiary of the municipal development and economic development company. The summer pool sponsoring association has leased the summer pool for one euro until 2025. In order to support the business financially, unconventional ideas were implemented.

Renovation 2018/2019

In September 2017, the city announced in a press release that the summer pool would be funded with 2.4 million euros from the project "Renovation of municipal facilities in the fields of sport, youth and culture" together with a contribution from the city of Minden. The three swimming pools will be lined and renovated to be watertight. In addition, barrier-free access will be established and the swimming pool technology will be renovated. The construction work began in August 2018 with the bath water technology and the concrete renovation of the summer changing room, before the pools will be renovated in spring 2019. After the completion of the major construction work, the outdoor facilities are to be restored in summer 2019.

The heat hall is financed by a crowdfunding campaign organized jointly with Volksbank Mindener Land and then implemented. The renovated heating hall is scheduled to go back into operation in 2019.

Citizen workers

Since 2012, the bath and the development association have been supported by so-called citizen workers . Former State Secretary Steffen Kampeter says: "That the summer pool is a model example of citizen work: 'Here you can experience exactly what this funding instrument is made for.'"

Swimming lessons

Swimming courses for children from needy families have been offered since the 2009 season, 90% of which is financed by the Dr. Strothmann Foundation. The target group was expanded in 2015 to include children of refugees . The Sommerbad thus continues the initial idea of teaching broad sections of the population to swim.
