The Sonnenbad in Karlsruhe is one of the few pure outdoor pools (without indoor swimming facilities) in Germany, which is open every day of the week from mid-February to early December. It is located in the Mühlburg an der Alb district near the Rhine port .

The long bathing season is made possible by the association “Freundeskreis Sonnenbad”, which brings in 32,000 euros annually to help finance the municipal swimming pool. The pool is used by around 130,000 visitors each year, making it one of the most efficient pools in town. The bath is also used for physical education and sports events.

history

It was first opened on June 6, 1915 as a "sun bath". As early as 1907, the first attempt to build the pool between the Nördliche Uferstrasse and the Alb was made, but it was never realized. It was not until the military building administration that the second attempt was implemented in 1914 and 1915, as the new pool was to be used as a military swimming school. Around 1920 the bath was called "Urban Swimming and Sunbathing at the Rheinhafen". It has had a warm water basin since 1965. In 1972 the bathroom was extensively renovated. On June 5, 2005, the “Rheinhafenbad”, as it was officially called for a long time, was renamed “Sonnenbad” again on the occasion of its 90th anniversary.
