Sonnenhof (project)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonnenhof is the name of a project by the landscape architect Leberecht Migge in Worpswede .

History and basics

He looked after his families of ten on a one-hectare plot of land with a country house that he bought in 1920 and wanted to prove that everyone can support himself. At the same time, he wanted to prove that you can make any soil fertile.

As early as 1918, Leberecht Migge had to “mechanize German soil”, which he stated in the Green Manifesto .

Migge described the theoretical basis for this project in his publication Jedermann Selbstversorger , published in Jena in 1919 . A solution to the settlement question through new horticulture .

In 1924/25 there was a collaboration with Leopold Fischer , who expanded the Sonnenhof, the home of the Migge family, into an ensemble. A cooperation was also agreed with the settlement of his neighbor Heinrich Vogeler .

Criticism and justification

Migge's concept already met with criticism in Worpswede. Carl Emil Uphoff criticizes the fact that Migge regards the soil quality as a negligible factor, which can nevertheless be used intensively. In contrast, Migge: "Every floor can, within limits, be brought to maximum performance - if necessary, completely replaced. (Jedermann Selbstversorger, P. 9f)

In his publication Der Soziale Garten from 1927 (quoted here from the new edition from 1999), Migge presents the Sonnenhof in Worpswede in a separate section (1999 edition, pp. 164-168; 12 illustrations: photos and sketches) . He complains that his doubts about the concept expressed in Jedermann Selbstversorger that the ground does not matter, "lagged behind" him. In order to "provide the proof" that his thesis was correct, he would have consciously set up the Sonnenhof (Der Soziale Garten, 1999 edition, p. 164f.). At its core, Migge's solution consists in the systematic creation of a 15-20 cm thick layer of humus.

continuation

In 1931, Migge leased the island of Dommelwall in southeast Berlin. He took up the ideas of the Sonnenhof project again and realized the sun island together with his partner Liesel Elsaesser, the wife of Martin Elsaesser .
