Sophie Hélène Béatrice 1786, sketch by Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun

Marie Sophie Hélène Béatrice de Bourbon (born July 9, 1786 in Versailles , † June 19, 1787 in Versailles) was a princess of France and Navarre . She was the fourth child and second daughter of King Louis XVI. of France and his wife Marie Antoinette of Austria.

Life

The infant was described by diplomat Mercy as "exceptionally tall and strong". The child was officially named Sophie in honor of the king's aunt, Sophie of France . The namesake could also have been Sophie von Fersen , a sister of Axel von Fersen .

Much to the sadness of her mother, the princess died at the age of eleven months, probably of tuberculosis . The next day she was buried in the cathedral of Saint-Denis .

Portraits

There are only two portraits of Princess Sophie Hélène Béatrice, one pastel and one sketch. They were created by Marie Antoinette's favorite artist, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, in 1786.

In 1787, Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun painted a group portrait of Marie Antoinette and her children (oil on canvas, 104 × 82 cm, Palace of Versailles ). Since the little princess had already died at this point, the queen can only be seen in the painting with her three older children. Sophie Hélène Béatrice is represented by the empty cradle that one of the children points to.
