The Sophienkreuz in Greiz in Thuringia, known under the name " White Cross ", is a sight of the Russian district town.

Geographical

The monument popularly known as the “White Cross” is located 375 meters above sea level on the Hirschstein, which can be seen from afar.

Direct access to the hiking trail is on Leonhardtstrasse (L2344) in the direction out of town from the Neumühle / Elster district .

history

Prince Heinrich XX, who ruled at his time . Reuss older line (1794–1859) had it built in 1838 in memory of his first wife, Princess Sophie Maria Theresia zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1809–1838), who died early .

The cross was knocked down several times due to the weather, and it was always rebuilt.

It has been a listed building since 1952 and is now a destination with a view of the city of Greiz and the princely park.
