The northern part of the Swiss canton of Ticino is called Sopraceneri , in contrast to the southern part of Sottoceneri . Sopraceneri means "above Monte Ceneri ", the pass that separates the Magadino plain from the Vedeggio valley. It is a predominantly rugged alpine landscape, but paradoxically, with Lake Maggiore at 192 m above sea level, it also contains the lowest point in Switzerland.
