Sourcefire was an American manufacturer of hardware and software in the field of network security . The Sourcefire 3D system is based on Snort , an open source intrusion detection solution.

history

Sourcefire was founded in 2001 by Martin Roesch, the developer of Snort , the open source technology that has become the de facto standard for intrusion detection and prevention . Sourcefire worked hard to evolve and maintained a close relationship with the Snort user community.

The firm's initial growth was based on four rounds of funding totaling $ 56.5 million, funded by venture capitalists such as Sequoia Capital .

In October 2005, Check Point tried to take over Sourcefire. In March 2006 this deal was canceled. The purchase failed due to resistance from the American government.

When it went public in March 2007, Sourcefire raised $ 86.3 million. The IPO took place under the consortium lead of Morgan Stanley , supported by Lehman Brothers as co-lead manager and UBS Securities LLC and Jefferies & Company as co-managers.

The acquisition of ClamAV by Sourcefire on 17 August, 2007.

In July 2013, Sourcefire was purchased by Cisco for $ 2.7 billion . Sourcefire's founder and chief engineer became chief engineer and vice president of a division of Cisco. In November 2014, Sourcefire products were renamed Cisco Products.

Products

The Sourcefire 3D system is an intrusion prevention solution that can be broken down into three phases of protection for customers - IPS, Adaptive IPS and Enterprise Threat Management (ETM).

IPS is an intrusion defense based on the Snort Detection Engine. The Adaptive IPS phase integrates the passive real-time network intelligence of Sourcefire RNA (Real-time Network Awareness), which offers an automatic threat assessment and results in a significant reduction in false positives and false negatives . The ETM phase should enable the detection of attacks, targets and the status of the critical systems in a system.

Snort is a rule-based network intrusion prevention and detection system under the GPL that combines signature, protocol and anomaly-based methods. Sourcefire extends the functionality by monitoring network behavior. Sourcefires RNA continuously maintains and documents the network profiles and the relevant weak points.

ClamAV (Clam AntiVirus) is an anti-virus program for Unix-like systems that is also under the GPL , primarily for scanning e-mails on a gateway.

Takeover by Cisco Systems

On July 23, 2013, Cisco Systems announced that it would take over Sourcefire, which was an agreement between the two companies. The takeover was fully finalized in 2013. Around 2.7 billion dollars were paid, which corresponds to 76 dollars per share and thus a premium of more than 20 percent on the closing price on the day of the announcement. The Sourcefire offer filled a gap at Cisco that existed, for example, in mobile access, current cybercrime tendencies and protection against data theft and loss. This strengthened the market position, especially in the development of complex firewalls, and customers received more protection against threats to their web applications, cloud computing and social media.
