South is an impact crater on the northwestern edge of the lunar front . It lies on the northern edge of the Sinus Roris , a bulge of the Oceanus Procellarum . The northwestern edge overlaps the Wall level of Babbage . The edge is badly eroded and almost completely leveled in the south.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the British astronomer James South .
