The South African Party ( Afrikaans Suid-Afrikaanse Party ) was a party in South Africa that existed from 1911 to 1934. It was founded by the two then dominant ethnic groups, the Boers and British settlers, shortly after the four colonies of Natal , Transvaal , Orange Free State and the Cape Colony were united to form the South African Union by Jan Christiaan Smuts and Louis Botha . The growing dissatisfaction with the SAP's economic policy in the early 1920s culminated in a general strike in 1922. The general strike was ended through negotiations and the deployment of the military. During the Great Depression, SAP was in opposition . On December 5, 1934, the SAP merged with the National Party to form the United National South African Party with the aim of reconciling the British and Afrikaans .
