Systems of the Clyde Tomb type

South Clettraval ( Gael . Cleitreabhal , also Tigh Cloiche) is an archaeological site in the west of the Hebridean island of North Uist in Scotland . A megalithic complex of the Clyde Tomb type , an Atlantic round house , a menhir and another destroyed complex are located here.

The severely disturbed , trapezoidal Clyde Tomb of Clettraval (also called Carry Tighary ) is facing west-east on a slope. The relatively thin, roof-tile-like overlapping panels of the approximately 10 m long chamber are slightly tilted. The cairn , originally around 29 m long, can still be seen in remains. Some of the 0.7 m high curbs and the slabs of the facade in the east have been preserved. A paved forecourt lay in front of the facade. During excavations by Lindsay Scott in the 1930s , fragments of Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery were found. Among them were numerous pieces of pottery that came from the "Eilean na Tighe" ( Harris ) and that was previously only found in the megalithic complex of Unival .

To the west lie within the cairn material the remains of an Iron Age wheelhouse 7.5 m in diameter with outbuildings, for the construction of which the stones of the Clyde tomb and its cairn were used. The ring-shaped outer wheelhouse wall is about 2.2 m thick and still stands up to a height of 1.2 m. Four of the originally seven plates, which form the radial subdivisions that gave it its name, are still standing. The low front walls of these stall-like compartments are only 0.4 m high. Also known as the Atlantic Roundhouse by Clettraval, this property dates back to the 1st century BC. BC, although new investigations (most recently in 1975) also found fragments from the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

In the south there is a 1.5 m high menhir ( English standing stone ) and a more disturbed cairn is nearby.
