South Cowton Castle is a residential castle from the 15th century in the English county of North Yorkshire . The Richmondshire District Castle is on the site of the former medieval village of South Cowton .

Sir Richard Conyers built the castle in 1470 and today it is the oldest surviving building in any of the Cowton villages. At the time of construction, the Wars of the Roses were raging , which was the likely reason for the strong fortification of a residential building for a member of the lower nobility in the country.

Today South Cowton Castle is listed as a Grade I Historic Structure. It is near the 15th century Church of St. Mary in South Cowton and above the overgrown features of the old village of South Cowton.

The castle is rectangular in shape and has two towers on the south-west and north-east side. The building is three stories high, the towers have a fourth story. In the 19th century the castle was rebuilt and in 1980 it was renovated.

Today the castle serves as a private farm. It is located near the state road B 1236 at Atley Hill .
