South Halsted Street Lift Bridge
The South Halsted Street Lift-Bridge was a lift bridge over the Chicago River in Chicago , Illinois . It was commissioned in 1894, dismantled in 1932 and replaced by a bascule bridge , Halsted Street South Branch Bridge , in 1934 .
history
In 1892, a competition for a bridge in Duluth , Minnesota , was announced, which was won by bridge engineer John Alexander Low Waddell . Its elaboration envisaged the construction of a lift bridge, which was new at the time. Due to the objection of the US War Department , this draft was not implemented in Duluth, but a few months later in a slightly different way in Chicago. In Duluth, the Aerial Lift Bridge was built instead of the lift bridge .
construction
The steel bridge led Halsted Street on a lattice girder with a span of 40 meters over the southern arm of the Chicago River . The truss could be raised by 47 meters with the help of counterweights, which were guided over towers on steel cables.
