South Talpatti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

South Talpatti , also New Moore Island or Purbasha , is a former island in the Bay of Bengal that is disputed in terms of belonging between India and Bangladesh .

The island appeared in 1970 after cyclone Bhola off the Sundarbans in the mouth of the Hariabhanga river. Measurements taken by American satellites in 1974 showed a size of about 2,500 square meters. Later measurements showed that the size had grown to about 10,000 square meters due to further mud deposits. The highest point on the island was never two meters. The uninhabited island, not protected by dams, was not found years later. In 2010 there were increasing reports of a no longer existing existence. On March 24, 2010, the island's disappearance was confirmed by oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta .

The global rise in sea level has only been around 10 cm since the island was formed and cannot alone explain the island's disappearance. The main cause is therefore primarily erosion processes , especially during tropical cyclones .
