The Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR) is a reflecting telescope with a diameter of 4.1 m for observations in the visible and near infrared. The location is at an altitude of 2738 meters on Cerro Pachón , Chile . It is operated by a consortium that includes Brazil , Michigan State University , the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .
