List of the largest optical telescopes
Overview of the largest optical telescopes
Telescopes for radiation with a wavelength of less than 100 µm that have diffraction or seeing- limited imaging are listed:
- Rank (not specified: special construction or historical / under construction)
- Diameter: dimension of the main optical component / of the area corresponding to the circle (partly segmented mirror ); the information may differ slightly due to the customary inch dimensions (rounding)
- Altitude: above sea level
- Nationality: the observatory or the sponsors
- Date: Commissioning: In some cases, the dates given in various sources for completion may differ by a year or more. This is mostly due to the fact that "commissioning" is defined differently ( first light , first light ; first recordings (often with temporary cameras); end of construction work; inauguration or scientific commissioning).
