Karl August Lossen

Karl August Lossen (born January 5, 1841 in Kreuznach , † February 24, 1893 in Berlin ) was a German geologist .

Life

Lossen studied at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , at the Bergakademie Berlin and at the University of Halle , where he received his doctorate in 1866 on the geology of the Taunus .

Lossen took up a position as a geologist at the Prussian State Geological Institute in 1866 ; from 1873 onwards he was a royal regional geologist. His most important work is the geological (“geognostic”) overview map of the Harz Mountains on a scale of 1: 100,000, which was first printed in 1877. Although Lossen was active in Berlin, he kept returning to the Harz Mountains to precisely map the geological layers there and to present several basic publications. For 27 years he dealt with the geological structure of the Harz Mountains. In 1883 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Lossen's brother was the chemist Wilhelm Lossen , and their niece was the actress Lina Lossen .
