The Magellan Telescopes

The Magellan telescopes are two optical telescopes at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile .

description

They have a diameter of 6.5 meters each and are named after the astronomer Walter Baade and the philanthropist Landon Clay. In contrast to other reflector telescopes of a similar size, their optical structure does not follow the Cassegrain arrangement , but rather Gregory telescopes . The primary mirror is made of borosilicate glass and has a parabolic shape with an aperture ratio of 1: 1.25. The secondary mirror has a diameter of almost 1.8 m; together they have an aperture ratio of 1:11. A plane tertiary mirror can deflect the beam path onto various instruments. The telescope has active optics and a system to compensate for atmospheric disturbances , which can also be used to expand the viewing angle from 6 'to 24'. The telescopes have an old azimuthal mount .

The Baade Telescope received the first images on September 15, 2000 and the Clay Telescope on September 7, 2002.

The telescopes were built by the Carnegie Institution of Washington (now the Carnegie Institution for Science ) and, like other, smaller instruments in the observatory, are managed by the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California .

Instruments

The "Clay" telescope has a number of imaging and spectrographic instruments:

  • MagIC, Magellan Instant Camera, a direct CCD image sensor
  • LDSS3, Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph, more efficient wide field multi-slit spectrograph
  • MIKE, Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle, low-loss double echelle spectrograph
  • MIKE Fibers, fiber optic coupling for MIKE to observe several objects.

The following instruments are available for the "Baade" telescope:

  • PANIC, Persson's Auxiliary Nasmyth Infrared Camera, an infrared camera
  • IMACS, Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph, a wide field camera and spectrometer for multiple objects
