The Southern Necropolis is a cemetery in the Scottish city of Glasgow .

history

A new city cemetery was set up in 1770 in what is now Gorbals , a district in Glasgow . After the cholera outbreak in 1832 had to be carried out on this cemetery, all privately owned grave sites on this site were exhausted by the end of the 1830s. In order to be able to offer cheap grave sites for the working class in the future, the establishment of the Southern Necropolis was decided in November 1839. The cemetery was used from 1840 and expanded several times in the same decade due to the high demand.

In 1970 the complex was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B as an individual monument . The associated gatehouse is classified as a monument of the highest monument category A. Both structures together also form a Category A monument ensemble. In 2010, the complex was included in the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. In 2014, their condition was classified as very poor and at the same time high risk.

description

The Southern Necropolis is located on Caledonia Road ( A730 ) in the southern Gorbal district of Glasgow. The cemetery is divided into three sections (west, central and east). There are numerous elaborately designed tombs there. The entrepreneur Thomas Lipton and the architects Alexander Thomson and Charles Wilson , who also designed the gatehouse, are buried there.

Gatehouse

The neo-Romanesque gatehouse on the northeast side was built in 1848 based on a design by Charles Wilson. It is designed with pseudo reinforcement. The archivolt of the arched portal is lavishly ornamented. A round arched arcade with half-columns runs above the archway . A crenellated stair tower rises to the left. The side facing the cemetery is designed more simply with a reduced number of windows.
