Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, 1st Baronet KCVO (born May 10, 1850 in Glasgow - † October 2, 1931 in London ) was a British self-made man , trader and yacht owner who created the famous Lipton tea brand and the toughest challenger in America's history Cup was.

Life

Thomas Lipton went to the USA in 1865 and took on various jobs there. He returned to the UK five years later and opened his first grocery store. This company turned out to be very successful and Lipton soon opened a chain of grocery stores. In order to supply them with goods, Lipton bought plantations, founded the Lipton company in 1898 and thus created, among other things, the Lipton tea brand, which still exists today (today belongs to Unilever ).

On May 31, 1870 Lipton became a member of the Federation of the Freemasons , his Loge Lodge Scotia Glasgow No. 178 is based in Glasgow . In March 1901 he was inducted into the Royal Victorian Order as Knight Commander . On July 29, 1902, he was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Osidge in the County of Middlesex.

He was a great sports enthusiast who also practiced various sports himself in his homeland and later in Argentina, especially sailing. King Edward VII and King George V both shared their interests in yachting with Lipton and enjoyed his company. Between 1899 and 1930, he urged the American Cup holder of the America's Cup on behalf of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club (Lipton was of Irish descent) five times with his yachts Shamrock to Shamrock V out. These efforts, which brought him a specially created trophy for the “best of all losers”, increased the awareness of his tea brand in the USA . As a self-made man, Lipton was not a born member of the British upper class, so the Royal Yacht Squadron only accepted him as a member shortly before his death.

In Argentina he founded the Copa Lipton in 1905 for an annual comparison of the national soccer teams of Argentina and Uruguay . Even before the first soccer world championship in 1930 he donated the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy , which was played in two international tournaments in Turin in 1909 and 1911. The cup was one of the first international club tournaments.
