Southern Weekly

Nanfang Zhoumo ( Chinese  南方周末 , Pinyin Nánfāng Zhōumò ; in Western media mostly referred to as Southern Weekend , Southern Weekly or Southern Weekend ) is a weekly newspaper in the People's Republic of China . The paper, which has existed since 1984 and is a sister publication of the Southern Daily , is published by the Southern Newspaper Media Group . The main editorial office is located in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou , with additional editorial offices in Beijing , Shanghai and Chengdu . The Southern Weekly is printed with a circulation of over 1.6 million copies in several locations at the same time and distributed nationwide. It is considered to be the largest weekly newspaper in mainland China and is therefore one of the most influential media in the country. The content is relatively liberal and critical of the government, which has already led to multiple disputes with the Chinese authorities and party apparatus.
