The Social Democratic Party of China ( Chinese  中國 民主 社會 黨 , Pinyin Zhōngguó Mínzhǔ Shèhuìdǎng , English China Democratic Socialist Party (CDSP )) was a party of the Republic of China in the post-war period and the part of the state that remained in Taiwan after 1949 .

history

The party was created through a merger of the National Socialist Party of China, founded in 1932, with the Democratic Constitutional Party, founded in 1927. In view of the experiences with the National Socialist German Workers' Party , the social democratic Zhongguo Guojia Shehuidang did not want to use the terms "guojia" (national, state-building) and "shehui" (socialist) together in the party name. Its founding chairman Zhang Junmai maintained close contacts with the Social Democratic Party of Germany . Like the National Socialist Party of China , the Social Democratic Party of China was a partner of one of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of the Communist Partyindependent party alliance, the Democratic League of China . After it was founded, the party took part in elections to the National Assembly and the Legislative Court in 1947 . This led to the break with the league, which joined the communists, and the split when part of the Social Democrats remained in the league and turned that organization into its own party. The elections brought the Chinese Social Democratic Party only a few seats in both chambers of parliament. During the constitution of the National Assembly in 1948, civil war was already raging between the armies of the Communist Party of China and the Republic of China , so that the Social Democratic Party of China also approved the special laws to "combat the communist rebellion", which restricted civil rights and the mandates of both chambers of parliament until the end of the Frozen state of tension. With the proclamation of the People's Republic of China and the withdrawal of the state organs to Taiwan, which had reverted to China, now the Republic of China, in 1945 after 50 years of Japanese colonial times, the party resumed its political work in Taiwan, but remained insignificant. In the local elections as well as in the elections to the Taiwanese provincial parliament, it won no seat from 1950. After the repeal of the special laws, the Social Democratic Party of China was re-registered as a party. The Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China dissolved it on April 29, 2020 for formal reasons.
