The social welfare association Spittal / Drau is a non-profit community association whose purpose is to build and operate old people's homes and nursing homes . It was founded in 1975 as an independent legal entity based on the Carinthian Social Welfare Act. The owners are the 33 municipalities of the Spittal an der Drau district , which are represented on the association council by the respective mayor. The foundation stone was laid in 1952 by the Spittal District Welfare Association, the predecessor of the SHV Spittal. In that year the "Sanatorium Marienheim" was acquired and adapted to the old people's home.
In 1958 the newly renovated and rebuilt "Sichenhaus Peinten" was bought and set up as a retirement home and nursing home. The financing comes from home costs, care allowances from the residents and a state grant. In 1986 the city of Gmünd took over the "Hintere Gasse" retirement home, and in 1989 the Albertini house followed with a focus on " assisted living " in Spittal. In 1999 the old people's home in Peintenstrasse was reopened after extensive renovation and expansion work. In 2004 the newly built Gmünd house in Riesertratte could be moved into. The "Hintere Gasse" retirement home became the Pankratium - the house of wonder. The St. Laurentius house in Winklern in Mölltal opened in 2004, and the Steinfeld house in the municipality of Steinfeld / Drautal was added the following year .
The SHV Spittal also operates a day center , a central kitchen in Spittal and a central laundry in Gmünd.
