The Social Liberal Party (PSL, Arabic الحزب الاجتماعي التحرري, French Parti social-libéral ) is a liberal party in Tunisia . The party publishes the daily al-Ufuq in Arabic .

history

The Social Liberal Party is a member of the Liberal International and the Réseau libéral africain . Founded on September 12, 1988 under the name Social Party for Progress (PSP), it changed its name in October 1993 to reflect its liberal orientation. After Mongi Khamassi (founder of the Green Party for Progress ) resigned , the party only had one representative in the Tunisian Chamber of Deputies .

The social liberals have taken part in all parliamentary elections since 1989. Its founder Mounir Béji also ran in the presidential elections in Tunisia in 2004, but received only 0.79% of the vote. Following the extraordinary party congress on July 15, 2006, Mondher Thabet was elected General Secretary and successor to Béji. The members of the new Politburo are Mohamed Anis Lariani, Larbi Ben Ali, Abderrahmène Mlaouah, Jamaleddine Ben Yahia, Mourad Maâtoug, Mohamed Chiheb Lariani, Tahar Kéfi and Mohsen Oun Nabli. The latter was appointed General Secretary on February 1, 2011, but was replaced by Hosni Lahmar at the extraordinary congress on May 1 that same year.
