Structure and tasks

The social association VdK Rhineland-Palatinate is federally organized. It is divided into:

  1. the regional association based in Mainz
  2. 27 district associations
  3. more than 750 local chapters.

Every four years , the VdK members send delegates through their district associations who decide on questions of principle and organization at the regional association day. There, the representatives of the regional association board and regional association committee are elected according to schedule. The tasks of the local associations include classic club life with joint excursions and celebrations. The district associations advise the VdKler on all social law issues, for example if there are problems with preparing the pension application or a cure that has been applied for is rejected by the health insurance company.

The regional association offers regular workshops for honorary judges of the Rhineland-Palatinate social justice system. In addition, he represents the interests of the members in relation to politics, business and society. In 2009 the social association VdK Rhineland-Palatinate criticized the Nursing Development Act and the grading system for quality testing of nursing homes with the campaign “Are you being cared for or are you already dying” . The association advocates a rating system based on knockout criteria.

The Rhineland-Palatinate legal protection office with its headquarters in Mainz and the branch offices in Koblenz, Trier and Speyer have existed since the association was founded. There the VdK members find full-time employees who represent their interests before the respective local social courts.

history

Demonstration of the war survivors in 1959

The founding meeting took place on October 20, 1946 under the name “Association of Rhenish War Victims and Survivors from the World Wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1949 Sitz Neuwied (self-help organization)”. Since the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was under French occupation at that time and the Allies issued the requirement not to use the word "war" in the name of the association in future, the name had to be changed again. 800 participants came to Neuwied for the official founding of the association on November 10, 1946. The French military government did not officially recognize the association until June 20, 1947, but it had to call itself the “Association of the Physically Disabled and Survivors”. The association has set itself the goal of ensuring lawful and appropriate care for war victims and survivors. The first local and district associations are organized in the cities and support the establishment of the regional association, which at this point already has 10,000 members.

First location of the office in a barrack in Koblenz

In 1950 the renaming of the "Federation for the Physically Disabled and Survivors" into "Association of War Disabled People, War Survivors and Social Pensioners of Germany, Landesverband Rheinland-Pfalz eV" takes place. In the same year, the regional office moves from a temporary “barrack” to Mainzer Strasse in Koblenz. On January 28, 1950, the social association VdK Germany with its seat in Bonn is finally founded as a federal association .

The VdK regional office in Mainz

In 1962 the social association VdK Rhineland-Palatinate opened the rest home “Johannes-Junglas-Haus” for its members, today's hotel “Haus Oberwinter” on the Rhine. It originated between the places Remagen and Oberwinter. After more than 30 years of operation, the hotel was rebuilt and renovated and a seminar area was added. The former rest home, originally intended only for VdK members, thus developed into a modern hotel. In 2002 the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) classified the hotel as a 3-star superior.

After two further name changes, the social association was given its current name in 2002 as "Sozialverband VdK Deutschland Landesverband Rheinland-Pfalz eV". In 2006 the VdK regional office moved from Koblenz to the regional capital Mainz. In the same year, the regional association celebrates its 60th anniversary.

With its "Action against Poverty", the social association VdK Rhineland-Palatinate in 2008 drew attention to the threat of unemployment, low wages and pension cuts. On July 1st, around 2000 people came together in the state capital Mainz to support the demands of the VdK: increase of the Hartz IV standard rates, pension adjustment in line with the inflation rate and a poverty officer for Rhineland-Palatinate. Over 40,000 signatures were collected for this.

On August 10, 2012, state chairman Andreas Peifer resigned from his position after internal criticism of his management style. On January 12, 2013, Willi Jäger was elected as the new regional association chairman by the delegates of the extraordinary regional association. From August 2012 until the new election in January 2013, the deputy chairman Ernst Schimmel was acting as head of the association's business.

“Get rid of the barriers!” Was the campaign with which the social association VdK Rheinland-Pfalz is campaigning for a barrier-free society in 2016. The VdK addresses those politically responsible in the federal, state and local governments with specific demands and publicity campaigns. The heart of the campaign is the “Barrier Map” on the campaign website www.weg-mit-den-barrieren.de.
