Sociological questions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sociological Questions is a book published in 1980 by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu . It contains a number of thematically diverse and relatively short contributions, including the central essay "On some properties of fields", which deals with the concept of the field in a nutshell. On the one hand, the contributions are interviews that Bourdieu gave and, on the other hand, papers and lectures that cover special areas of his theory (e.g. musical tastes).

The first part of the book (pp. 10–90) deals with the role of the sociologist as a scientist and intellectual and Bourdieu's understanding of a critical-reflexive sociology . The following pages deal with disparate topics, to a considerable extent of cultural sociology ("On the origin and development of the types of music lovers", "Haute Couture and Haute Culture", "Historical and social requirements of modern sport", "The metamorphosis of taste"), but also linguistically (“The Linguistic Market”, “The Censorship”). The last part touches on political issues (“There is no such thing as public opinion”, “Education and politics”, “Strikes and political action”, “The racism of the intelligentsia”).
