Putty , also briefly filler is a paste-like substance for superficial repair works with a spatula applied and after curing smooth ground is. It is used in model construction , body construction , drywall construction and plastering .

features

In order to counteract any shrinkage during drying or setting , the filler is usually applied generously and later, e.g. B. with sandpaper , sanded. This subsequent processing is not necessary for the similar materials plaster or mortar , for example .

Filling compounds that are available in powder form and are mixed with water to form the actual compound are common (e.g. plaster of paris ). Wood putty and wood paste are special fillers for wood , the color of which corresponds to that of the surrounding wood, so that they can be used for repairs on parts that are exposed to wood (e.g. furniture).

Component spatula

In addition to leveling compounds that cure by drying in the air, there are also compounds that are provided with an initiator before use (mixed, mixed by kneading) and harden chemically after application . These are components spatula called as "two-component filler".

This type of filler can be made by adding one or more components e.g. B. can be used for a fiberglass repair or as a leveling compound for the coherent connection of slate sheets at billiard tables .

Widespread are z. B. Car putty, also known as polyester putty, based on polyester, and putty based on epoxy resin . Both can be enriched with fiberglass and other additives.

hazards

In the past, fillers were often added to asbestos to improve the mechanical properties. This results in health risks today, since asbestos fibers are released during mechanical processing. Any manipulation of such leveling compounds by non-experts must be avoided, only experts according to TRGS 519, Appendix 3 are allowed to work on them. A sampling may have to be carried out prior to removal, e.g. B. according to VDI guideline 6202, sheet 3.

Filler

The hardened and sanded filler is not smooth enough for subsequent painting due to its graininess. To smooth the surface, filler has to be applied to the filler.
