Proliferating Sparganum

As sparganosis is caused by the disease called human Sparganum of the tapeworm - the mobile second instar - Spirometra erinacei-Europaei is caused. It is rare, between 1953 and 2003 300 cases were described worldwide, of which only 7 were in Europe.

S. erinacei-europaei occurs mainly in East Asia and the Mediterranean area. The tapeworm has a complex life cycle with two host changes . Humans are transport hosts and are primarily infected with the sparganum through ingestion of tadpoles or insufficiently heated frogs and snakes . Under certain circumstances, an infection can occur through accidental ingestion of copepods , the carriers of the first larva, with the water while swimming.

After being absorbed into the body, the larva can attack various organs and settle in the eyes , muscles , subcutaneous tissue , abdominal cavity or the brain . The symptoms of the disease depend on the location of the sparganum. The involvement of the brain can cause seizures and paralysis .

The parasite is mainly detected during surgical interventions and can be removed immediately.
